This site was crafted by hand using Emacs with the Emacs PHP mode for the php bits. Tested using Mozilla, both running under Debian GNU/Linux. If you haven't used mozilla yet, then go get it. Available for most platforms and it rocks. There is also now a slimmed down mozilla called Firefox - previously called Firebird and Phoenix. Its really good.
When I get somewhere more complete, then I will test using the other browsers.
This site is hosted at Areti Internet
CSS is used throughout. Thanks to whoever (Mr Packer or Mr Morris) who did the DSU steering and made me think of style sheets.
Bits of the site use PHP. Even though they might not be that interactive. I am going to makesure it gives out reasonable http voodoo so that it doesn't have to reload pages from the server all the time. If you want to do this on your site, then there is a good guide for webmasters.
There are two dates on the bottom of each page. The first one - page content last modified - is the date that contents of the current page were last changed. Use this to see if I have been keeping my pages up to date. The second one - overall page last modified - is the latest date that any part of the page changed. So if the table of contents (not yet added), header or footer change, then the the first will stay the same, but the second will change. The second is the date sent to your browser as last modified date.
This is a bit silly really, but I have scripts setup so I can say what I am doing today on my frontpage. It isn't always there, because it deletes itself so that it doesn't become out of date.
Compliance to standards is important to me. The standards for html, xhtml and css can be found at w3c. Presently most of the site is valid html 4.01 transitional. The site is changing all the time and I am working on content. When it gets more together I will be working more on validating all my pages, and possibly moving to html 4.01 strict or maybe xhtml. I need to experiment to see if common browsers support enough of CSS to handle strict and whether xhtml upsets anything.
If you find that any part of this site does not work acceptably in your web browser, then please get in touch and I will trying to do something about it. Please say which browser and operating system you are using, what the problem is, and if you have any ideas about how to fix it.
